MetLife Foundation School Art Program:
2006 Projects

PS 102

PS 102, Queens
This project, entitled "Celebrations Around the World", is a colorful depiction of festivals, culture, costumes, and traditions from various countries and nationalities. Sixth grade students worked in small groups of 4-8 classmates, and studied the culture and history of different countries. Each group selected a country, and brought to life the vibrancy, colors, and emotions of its culture. After sketches and full scale mock-ups, the students painted their murals onto large pieces of wood, that were then sealed and installed in the auditorium. These images evoke the joy of various celebrations, and surround all the activities in the auditorium for a true celebration of the performing arts.

PS 219

PS/IS 219, Queens
Eighth grade students at PS/IS 219 created this painted mural entitled "Beginnings", which was installed in the school's cafeteria. The students selected this theme, as they considered this project a parting gift to their school from which they were about to graduate. Hence, the time reflected a "beginning" for the students, which is evoked in their images. The students created sunrises, spaceships preparing for takeoff, birds in flight, and dramatic horizons that all symbolize the promise of the future for everyone.

IS 126

iS 126, Queens
Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades participated in this project, entitled "Abstraction Fractions". Each student created a different abstract image on a 14" square wooden tile. Students used printmaking, collage, and painting to create their colorful tiles, which were arranged and installed in the school's front entrance, flanking the main staircase. The concept of abstract art was new to many of the students, and presented a stimulating challenge. The result is a bold and dramatic welcome to all who enter this school, evidence of the talent, creativity, and vivacity of the students at IS 126.

PS 182, Bronx
"Castle Hill Sunrise", a cut and painted paper collage, is comprised of two large panels, each 4 feet by 8 feet, created by fifth graders.   Surrounding these panels is a colorfully decorated frame, created by first graders.  These pieces are assembled and installed in the main lobby of the school. The collage depicts the architecture, population, street activity, and school activity in a single, unified image, relating to classroom studies of community and the environment.  To create this colorful montage, the students cut out shapes and images from a vast array of papers of different colors, patterns and textures.  They toured and studied their community, interpreting images they observed into their work.  They collaborated to produce a vibrant scene of morning life in the Bronx – capturing the colors of a sunrise and the promise of a new day.

"Peace Bubbles" is a collection of circular images created by third grade students. The students will create a project called Peace Net: A Suspension Swarm of Peace Bubbles.  Students will embark on creating an installation that will be in the entrance of the school.   The bubbles will then travel throughout the school, as a constant reminder that we should all cultivate a mind and environment that nurtures peace.  Each student will create one bubble, so in total there will be approximately 90 bubbles hovering and floating throughout the school building. Students will look at patterns from different cultures around the world.   Students will practice working within the circular form, as this is not a form that most students have worked within.  Students will also look at Mandalas, thinking about ideas of symmetry, shape, structure, and pattern.   They will also look at natural and manmade patterns in our surrounding environment.

"The Flowers of Our Nations" is a modular mural of large scale painted panels. PS 139 is a school with great diversity.  For this project, two classes were selected and they identified 40 countries of origin of the students in the school.   Next, they researched the "national flowers" of these nations, to represent on this modular mural.  Students learned about these flowers as well as the cultural background of the nations.   They practiced drawing the flowers, beginning with small pencil and charcoal sketches, and practiced working with paints and developed color mixing skills.   The panels are to be installed in the main entrance of the school, greeting all visitors, staff, and students, and proudly illustrating the vibrant cultural diversity of the student body.   The panels will be arranged in the "T" shape, surrounding the two main entrances to the auditorium, professionally installed in a custom frame system.
