MetLife Foundation School Art Program: 2005 Sites

PS 170, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn
STUDIO A
rtist: McKendree Key
As part of the theme "Buildings, Bridges and Books: Our Amazing Neighborhood" students at PS 170 created two hand-painted silk panels that were installed in the school's main stairwell. To prepare for the piece, students walked around their neighborhood, incorporating elements of the Verrazano Bridge, Coney Island, Shore Road, their local library, fire station and school into the final piece that welcomes students every day.

PS 112, Long Island City, Queens
STUDIO Artist: Noel Copeland

"Dutch Kills Gardens" is a vibrant series of painted and glazed handmade ceramic tiles that greet students and visitors to PS 112's main entrance. Students interpreted images of neighborhood character, birds, animals, flowers, and other natural elements onto individual tiles. The project includes several birds suspended on the wall above the doorways. The significant placement of this artwork, combined with its size and the high quality of the material, provide a wonderful contribution to the physical and emotional environment in this school.

PS 120, Flushing, Queens
STUDIO Artist: Jessie Krause

"A Mural of Imaginary Worlds" is a 18 panel, painted mural in the school cafeteria of PS 120 made by three 2nd grade classes. Students were asked to sketch individually from their imagination and then work in groups to paint final versions, emphasizing complimentary colors and design links. The results are a vibrant, unified mural that borders one of the most used areas of the school.

PS 42, Chinatown
STUDIO Artist: Laura Nova
"Paperscape" is a montage of neighborhood buildings and monuments in a lightbox in PS 42's main hallway. Fouth 4th grade classes toured and examined their Chinatown neighborhood concentrating on the physical differences of various types of architecture. They then painted collages that were digitally scanned and incorporated into a lightbox print, resulting in a colorful interpretation of the community.

Newcomers High School, Long Island City, Queens
STUDIO Artist: Alice Wu

"Pillars of Life" was a new model for STUDIO, created by students and MetLife volunteers alike. Newcomers High School, created to provide immigrant students an academic program geared to their unique needs, came up with the idea of a totem pole with layers representing the various cultures at the school. As part of this project, students wrote expressive essays about what they made and why. After completion, the piece was displayed at MetLife's Midtown lobby to great fanfare.
