The theme of "The
Neighborhood Around Me," a painted wood mural, is centered
on the richness of the surrounding area of Harlem. The children
have gained inspiration from small field trips around the neighborhood
where they drew sketches of their environment. Later, Ms. Miller
taught the children how to translate their sketches onto wood panels
that show self-portraits incorporated into images of neighborhood
life. Using painting and collage techniques, the two wood panels
are installed outside the auditorium.

"Astoria, Our Multicultural Community" consists of a three-dimensional
wood relief and acrylic painted mural portraying the ethnically
diverse surrounding area of Astoria. The students drew their inspiration
from field trips into the neighborhood where they observed the different
types of stores, people and personalities of their environment.
From these sketches, they have produced images of subway cars depicted
in wood relief, showing the spectrum of the local cultures in Astoria.
About 90 students from 3 classes have collaborated to produce these
pieces, which are hung in the entryway to the school.

"Collage Creations: The 12 Animals of the Chinese Zodiac"
was designed to reflect the cultural heritage of the students participating
in the project. To create this piece of permanent art, the students
were encouraged to choose an animal of the Chinese Zodiac, using
books as a reference to explore the physical structure of their
chosen animal. Later, these construction paper studies were used
as templates for the fabrication of the beautiful colored plastic
pieces of the installation.

"The Fabulous Faces of PS 199Q", a mural of self-portraits,
is installed in the entrance lobby of the school, flanking the main
hallway. This project demonstrates the wide ethnic diversity of
the school, which has children that come from 40 different countries.
Through studying self-portraiture, the students examined the differences
and similarities between each other. The murals are comprised of
two large panels (each 81" x 86") with 112 painted self-portraits
(each 9" x 11"), created by 108 students and 4 teachers.

"Portraits With Hope" is a set of murals of mixed media
self-portraits. The central themes are identity (myself and others)
and culture (my school and community). The work consists of two large
murals, each approximately 10' by 4'. Each mural is comprised of a
collage of self-portraits surrounding a large painted interpretation
of the school and community. The murals are hung prominently in the
school's main entryway. |

"Building the American Dream,"a 9' by 9' ceramic tile mural,
is installed in the entrance lobby of the school. The students made
the clay tiles themselves, and then designed and glazed the images
on each one. The tile mural derives its theme from the special characteristic
of the school that serves newly arrived immigrant children for one
year. Dealing with the theme of "immigration" and the school
motto "passport to a new beginning" the students created
portraits of people and symbols from their homeland and combined them
with images of New York City Landmarks. Three classes, one each from
6th, 7th and 8th grade, worked on this project, for a total of 60
students on this project. |
