The Studio in a School/MetLife Foundation School Art Program joins professional artist instructors with students in New York City’s public schools to create permanent art installations that incorporate personal, neighborhood, and community identities. Students work as a team to plan, create, and exhibit a work of art for a public space. Events are held to celebrate the student artists and to unveil the finished artworks. All the projects are featured in highly visible locations and accessible to the students, teachers, parents, communities and neighborhoods involved in their creation. Since 1986, the Studio in a School/MetLife Foundation School Art Program has connected students to the arts, while connecting schools to their communities. MetLife Foundation was established in 1976 by MetLife for the purpose of supporting educational, health and civic and cultural organizations. Their goals are to strengthen communities, promote good health and improve education. The Foundation continues a tradition of corporate contributions and community involvement begun by MetLife at the turn of the century. Since 1990, MetLife and MetLife Foundation have contributed over $35 million to help ensure that children have the opportunity to make the arts part of their lives. ![]() MetLife volunteers and students from Newcomers High School admire their "Pillars of Life" creation, displayed in MetLife's Midtown lobby.
