Asia Society Collaboration
Studio in a School and the Asia Society have been collaborating
for seven years on the "School Art Project." The program, run by Nancy
Blume of the Asia Society, offers a few Long Term Program sites a chance
to participate in an in-depth exploration of a current Asia Society exhibition.
Artist-teacher teams are first invited to an exhibition walk-through and
a workshop to explore exhibition themes and curriculum connections. The
program wonderfully integrates art with classroom studies by giving students
the chance to look closely at work by artists from other countries, to
learn about what is important to those artists, and what they want to
express through their art. The teams then return with their students who
tour the show guided by an Asia Society Educator. In addition to working
in their sketchbooks, they discuss issues relating to Asian values, culture,
and art. Returning to their school art studios, they work with classroom
teachers and STUDIO artist/instructors to respond to what they've learned
by creating their own works of art. The artwork is then displayed in an
exhibition in the spring. Speeches by students and adults celebrate the
annual event at an elegant reception hosted by the Asia Society.

these annual collaborations, please visit the Asia
Society website.
