Special Programs provide students with project-based workshops. The school day program pairs an artist with four teachers to develop and implement a 14-week unit of study. The after-school program provides art activities and a safe haven for children after school, as well as professional development for after-school staff. Special Programs are built on collaboration and planning between the artist and classroom teachers, combined with professional development for teachers. Through child-centered teaching, students develop their creativity, self-confidence, and problem-solving skills. Professional development helps the classroom teacher sustain the excitement initiated by the artist and continue to develop the students’ new skills.

Fifty-nine Special Programs artists are serving 12,000 students, 480 teachers, and 1,800 parents, at 120 New York City sites.

Student artwork is regularly exhibited to the public at STUDIO's two gallery spaces, and all residencies end with a celebratory exhibition that gives students a chance to share their accomplishments. Please visit our Students Exhibitions page for more details.
