Long Term Program School Eligibility




Who Can Apply?

Elementary schools that need art instruction (are not already served by an art teacher) for a minimum of 15 classes from grades K through 6, have a classroom with a sink to dedicate as an art studio, and can provide a school aide/ or para- professional as a studio assistant.

What Schools Receive
• A STUDIO subsidy of approximately 80% of the program’s cost.

• A STUDIO artist (interviewed and chosen by the school) will establish an art studio in the provided classroom and teach art classes 4 days a week for the entire year (15 one-hour classes per week) for the first two years of the program.

• Two professional development workshops for classroom teachers.

• Time allotted for planning meetings with participating teachers at the beginning of each semester.

• One parent workshop with take-home art kits to encourage art-making as a family activity.

• On- going displays of student artwork, including a culminating art show/celebration to be scheduled with the artist.

• A commitment to working with the school community for up to 5 years (in the latter 3 years for 2 to 3.5 days per week), pending successful completion of program components and commitments by the school.

• Celebrations of selected student artwork in city-wide exhibitions in Studio’s galleries.

• A generous supply of high-quality art materials and tools.

What is required?
• An encumbered commitment of $8,075 from the school through a purchase order drawn up before the program begins to match STUDIO ’s contribution/grant.

• A full-size classroom with a sink for use as a dedicated art studio.

• A school-aide or paraprofessional to serve as a Studio Assistant, 4 days per week.

• In the first year there must be 15 teachers who desire the program and are committed to planning with the artist and being active participants/co-teachers in the art studio.

• The school must have 15 classes that are not otherwise being served by an exisiting visual-arts teacher, that can attend weekly one-hour art studio sessions, arranged over 4 days per week (with one open-studio slot for additional instruction & hanging displays)

• Teacher release time or per-session after school time for two professional development workshops (minimum 1.5 hours each)

• Scheduling one parent workshop.

• Sufficient & appropriate exhibition space made available for displaying student art-work in the school building.

• Preference will be given to Title 1 schools in regions underserved by Studio in a School. Please feel free to contact the program director at 212-459-1455 x 233, to determine whether your school is a good candidate before submitting an application.
