Our Programs

All STUDIO workshops are led by professional artists, whose own commitment to the arts provides an inspirational guide through the creative process. Following an artist's way of working, students learn to experiment and then make informed choices about materials and techniques, to give thoughtful reflection to what they have created, and to feel pride in sharing their creations with others. STUDIO's artists and administrative staff also work to develop collaborative relationships with program sites. Such relationships strengthen the impact of STUDIO's programs and enhance the capacity of both partners to make the arts a vital part of the learning experience. We encourage you to contact us to help you decide which of our programs is right for you.

Special Programs

These programs, which reach four- to eighteen-year-old students, place a professional artist in residence at a public school for a minimum of fourteen weeks. This special residency provides the students with sequential, age-appropriate art lessons that lead to artwork that is displayed at a closing exhibition.

Professional Development Programs

Our professional development programs range from a single workshop or workshop series (per school or region-wide) to a ten-week residency that provides a STUDIO artist to mentor teachers in creating and implementing arts projects on their own.

Early Childhood Program

STUDIO's Early Childhood Program is a two-year program for teaching art to children ages three to seven. It offers the artistic services of a professional artist, who, in addition to bringing in her/his artistic expertise, has been trained extensively in working with pre-school school children. Together, artists and classroom teachers create an arts-rich environment in the classroom, establishing child-centered art learning centers.

Long Term Program

Limited in number, this program places a professional artist in the participating school for up to five years in a dedicated art studio. Offering an especially rich artist-teacher partnership, the program allows teachers to develop the ability to conduct art lessons themselves and to extend art into the everyday curriculum. In the 2006-07 school year, the STUDIO program in partnership with Pratt Institute that was designed to provide NYS K-12 art certification to artists will become a component of the Long Term Program, and schools may request artists working toward certification. In these special cases, artists will teach for only two years in a Long Term site while they complete the credential requirements and are eligible to be hired by their sites at completion of the program (school year 2008-09).
