Collage: Learning Takes Shape

As Skills Develop and Artists Grow

Anca, grade 5

cut paper collage
STUDIO artist: Damali Miller

After creating compositions with limited colors, the next step could be working on a larger format and creating compositions with a wider range of student-selected colors. Working with big, medium, and small shapes, students begin to appreciate the importance of applying big shapes first, then medium, and, finally, the small details last. They make layering and overlapping decisions. They learn to work with spatial relationships, as well as positive and negative space. They make choices about colors and their placement.
