Collage: Learning Takes Shape

As Skills Develop and Artists Grow

Guillermo, grade 3

cut-paper collage
STUDIO artist: Damali Miller

Creating positive and negative space drawing with scissors: Students learn a lot about composition and color by working with positive and negative space – the shape created by the leftover paper when you cut out a shape. Students can try this for themselves using three different colored sheets of paper. Students cut one large shape using a continuous cut. Then they glue that shape to one sheet and the negative shape created with the leftover paper each on a separate sheet of paper.
