PROFESSIONAL ARTIST EMPLOYMENT*
Studio in a School (STUDIO) seeks professional visual artists, ideally living in the outer boroughs, for teaching positions in public schools, daycare and community centers throughout New York City. For 35 years, STUDIO has successfully collaborated with the New York City Department of Education to bring high quality, imaginative visual arts experiences to students and teachers. We are a not-for-profit arts organization that places professional visual artists in New York City's public schools, childcare centers, and community centers to introduce collage, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and 2-D applied design and media technology to children and teenagers. Our purpose is to make art a vital part of students' daily educational experiences. The STUDIO artist/instructor develops lesson plans, works in tandem with classroom/art teachers, and presents a variety of art skills in the classroom. Artist Employment Overview

To accomplish this, the STUDIO artist/instructor presents a variety of art skills in the classroom, works in tandem with classroom teachers, and develops art lesson plans. Teaching positions at STUDIO are always part-time (one to four days per week) enabling the artist to continue working actively on his or her own art in his or her own studio. For Early Childhood positions:
• Experience and interest in working with Pre-K through first-grade children
• Knowledge of paint, clay, collage, puppetry, and wood construction
• Comfortable leading teacher professional development sessions and parent workshops for adults
(Program description listed below)
For Long Term and Residency Program positions:
• Preference given to those with the ability to use technology, i.e. iPads, flip cameras, digital editing programs etc., to capture student success; to
incorporate technology into the creation of artwork with students; and to acquire resources and exemplary artworks to motivate students.
• Experience working with students pre-K through 12th grades within the public school system a plus.

Long Term ProgramLong Term Program sites are located in New York City's public elementary schools. Artists teach four full days a week during the school year, over a two-year period of time. In the third year, the program switches to part-time for an additional three years. The Studio artist will remain at a site through the transition from full-time to part-time. Approximately 85% of your time will be spent in the school where you will be responsible for classroom instruction, lesson planning and orientation meetings, teacher-training workshops, and special assignments. Approximately 15% of your time will be used for administrative duties, record keeping, tracking student results and purchasing of supplies.
Residency ProgramsSites are located in New York City's public elementary, middle and
high schools. The programs run for a period of six to fourteen weeks. In this program artists work with four different classes a day, one day a week per school. Approximately 85% of your time will be spent in school providing orientation/planning, classroom art instruction, teacher training, and display of artwork. Approximately 15% of your time will be used for administrative duties, record keeping, tracking student results, and meetings with STUDIO Directors and training. |
Early Childhood ProgramThe Early Childhood Program takes place in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and first grade classes in New York City's public elementary schools and
day care centers. Artists teach four different classes one day per week for a period of twenty-six weeks. In addition, you will be actively involved in providing staff development for early childhood staff in the schools. Approximately 85% of your time will be spent in school providing classroom instruction; staff development; teacher-training workshops; orientation/planning; and preparation and display of artwork. The remaining 15% of your time will be used for administrative duties, training, record keeping, tracking student results and meetings with STUDIO Directors. After School ProgramThe After School Program takes place in New York City public school buildings, community centers, or temporary housing sites after school, from approximately 3:15 - 5:15 p.m. These programs run one afternoon a week, for a minimum of eight weeks. Artists give instruction in collage, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and/or bookmaking, culminating in a display of children's artwork at the end of the program.
