Artist Employment Guide
Dear Artist:
Thank you very much for your interest in Studio in a School. We hope that
all your questions about qualifications necessary to teach for STUDIO
and how to apply for employment will be answered by the information on
this sheet. We hire visual artists for four separate programs described
below. Sites are located throughout the five boroughs.
Artist Employment Overview
Our purpose is to make art a vital part of students' daily educational
experiences. To accomplish this, the STUDIO artist/instructor develops
lesson plans, works in tandem with classroom/subject teachers, and presents
a variety of art skills in the classroom. Teaching positions at STUDIO
are always part-time (one to four days per week) enabling the artist to
continue working actively on his or her own art in his or her own studio.
The starting salary for all artists is $207 per day. Artists who work
in the After School Program are paid $75 per session.
Employment Descriptions
by Program
Long Term Program
Long Term Program sites are located in New York City's public elementary
schools. Artists teach four full days a week during the school year, over
a two-year period of time. In the third year, the program switches to
part-time for an additional three years. Generally the STUDIO artists
will remain at a site through the transition from full-time to part-time.
Approximately 85% of your time will be spent in the school where you will
be responsible for classroom instruction, lesson planning and orientation
meetings, teacher-training workshops, and special assignments. Approximately
15% of your time will be used for administrative duties, record keeping,
and purchasing of supplies.
NEW! Long Term Program Credential Component is an art teacher certification program designed to establish well-trained, licensed art teachers in New York City public schools. Teaching artists undertake a demanding, full time schedule during two years in a Long Term Program site, including teaching, training, graduate level course work, etc. Following the certification year, artists can remain at their Long Term sites, should the school be able to hire them as the art teacher, or may opt to seek another teaching position within or outside of the NYC public schools. (please see below for this program's special application)
Early Childhood Program
The Early Childhood Program takes place in Pre-K, Kindergarten and first
grade classes in New York City's public elementary schools and day care
centers. Artists teach four different classes one day per week for a period
of twenty-eight weeks. In addition, you will be actively involved in providing
staff development for early childhood staff in the schools. Approximately
85% of your time will be spent in school providing classroom instruction;
staff development; teacher-training workshops; orientation/planning; and
preparation and display of artwork. The remaining 15% of your time will
be used for administrative duties, training, record keeping, and preparation
of daily logs and meetings with STUDIO Directors.
Special Programs
Sites are located in New York City's public elementary, middle and high
schools. The programs run for a period of ten to fourteen weeks. In this
program artists work with four different classes a day, one day a week
per school. Approximately 85% of your time will be spent in school providing
orientation/planning, classroom art instruction, teacher training, and
display of artwork. Approximately 15% of your time will be used for administrative
duties, record keeping/daily log, and meetings with STUDIO directors and
training.
After School Program
The After School Program takes place in New York City public school buildings,
community centers, or temporary housing sites after school, from 3:15-5:15
p.m. These programs run one or two afternoons a week for sixteen to thirty-five
weeks. Artists give instruction in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture,
and bookmaking, culminating in a display of children's artwork at the
end of the program.
