Catherine Ramey

Artist Statement
I work with imagery, which utilizes the intensity of nature as a motif for spiritual and psychological being. I combine an amalgam of impressions into one image. I begin with a form but the form is no more or less important than the feeling that surrounds it and the deeper and more enduring intangible that cradles that feeling. The organic inferences in the most recent series of paintings evolve from my experiences cultivating a lush garden in upstate New York. I use the devices and strategies of representation towards abstract ends. The scale and the magnitude can shift so that some of the pictures are details and some are vistas. I recall moments of clarity and emotional response and then the paint takes over.

In the end these pieces are a record of the journey.

The surfaces are worked with various implements and mediums to create a physical density. Saturated color and fluid light are vehicles for harmonic resonance, balance, and rhythm.

Lately, I find myself influenced by the dense glaze work of the Sabi style of Japanese ceramics. There is a simplicity and richness in their rustic imperfection.
