Artist Employment Guide

Dear Artist: Thank you very much for your interest in Studio in a School. We hope that all your questions about qualifications necessary to teach for STUDIO and how to apply for employment will be answered by the information on this sheet. We hire visual artists for four separate programs described below. Sites are located throughout the five boroughs.

Artist Employment Overview

Our purpose is to make art a vital part of students' daily educational experiences. To accomplish this, the STUDIO artist/instructor develops lesson plans, works in tandem with classroom/subject teachers, and presents a variety of art skills in the classroom. Teaching positions at STUDIO are always part-time (one to four days per week) enabling the artist to continue working actively on his or her own art in his or her own studio.

How to Apply for a Position as a STUDIO Artist/Instructor

**Please read carefully before sending in your resume**

The Studio in a School Association is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Requirements for Employment as an Artist/Instructor:

  • College degree, B.A./B.F.A, (M.A./M.F.A. preferred and required if applying for the Long Term Credential Component program).
  • Practicing professional artist.
  • Exhibition history.
  • Experience teaching children and/or teenagers in a school or community setting. (Preference is always given to those with teaching experience.)

To Apply:

Please send a resume indicating your education, teaching experience, and your exhibition history. Include a brief statement telling us why you want to teach in the New York City public schools, mentioning any special qualities and/or talents you have that would be beneficial to Studio in a School.

Please do not send slides. If you are called for an interview, you will be asked, at that time, to bring images of your work as well as samples of work done by students you have taught.

Please note: Interviewing and hiring are primarily done from May through July. However, if an opening becomes available during the school year, we will call upon artists whose resumes are already on file.

If your qualifications match our needs and if we have an opening we will call you to come in for an interview. If you are qualified but we have no opening we will keep your resume on file for one year and will notify you if a suitable opening occurs during that time. You may reapply after a year if you have not heard from us.
