Studio in a School provides children with the invaluable experience and guidance of a professional artist, high-quality art materials, in-depth creative experience, and the joy of making art.
STUDIO hires only professional artists to teach its programs, because they can demonstrate how an artist works and thinks. Our students learn that art is more than a skill, but a process of exploration and discovery.
STUDIO has developed unique expertise in the field of art education, with in-depth programs focusing exclusively on visual art (drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, and two-dimensional applied design). Studio has extensive experience organizing the facilities, materials, schedules, and training that enable art making to become an integral part of students' education.
STUDIO fosters collaboration through multiple planning sessions and developing strong, long-term relationships with sites' staffs. In roundtable discussions, Studio artists, teachers, and administrators work together to develop lesson plans responsive to students' interests as well as curriculum requirements.
STUDIO's lessons teach children how to express their experiences through visual art. Our programs focus on the development of imagination, expression, and careful observation. Students are encouraged to portray not only their dreams, but also their surroundings. The process helps children organize their thoughts and develop deeper understanding of their communities.
STUDIO offers workshops to involve family and friends in children's school experiences and help them continue arts education at home. Working with Studio artists, adults learn about the materials and techniques their children use and the important role art making can play in their children's development.
STUDIO is partnered with the Department of Education in the professional development of art and classroom teachers. We are a major resource for professional development programs, reaching classroom teachers and art specialists.
At STUDIO, we reinforce lessons through demonstration, discussion, group reflection, and exhibitions of student art. Every Studio program culminates in artworks to be shared in an on-site exhibition, and some result in events at cultural and corporate institutions or one of Studio's two gallery spaces. Students and their families are invited to special opening receptions that celebrate the children's artworks. |
